I received a check ($3850) and letter in the mail 4 days ago stating that I had won the lottery. I called the number and the guy told me to place the check in my bank account so I did and after that the money cleared. Now he wants me to take the money to a certain location and give it to someone for clearance fees for my $225,000 check that I will receive in the mail by overnight 24 hour delivery. Should I take him this money or should I just keep it and let bygons be bygons? But I feel as if I didn't have to give them anything and I have entered into so many lotteries that I can not remember them all. Would you go threw with it or would you let it go?

Look at the questions I have answered on this site in my info. There are so many winners there could not be enough money to pay them all.There is no International Lottery.This is a Nigeria scam. Yahoo/MSN, U.K. and Australian lotteries, football lotteries from the same counties, Global-Link, World Poverty, Microsoft, Free Lotto, which now seems to have it's own people answering gambling questions on this site claiming they have won which is a total lie, and hundreds more. I am a retired Police Officer that has years of experience investigating Internet scams and frauds. This is an old one. The common link to them getting your email is on line surveys. Yahoo does not give it's stock holders money away nor does it give it's email subscribers address's to lotteries. The only way to win in a lottery is to buy a ticket, if you didn't you could not possibly win. Also go to www.ripoffreport.com and browse complaints and you will find many having the same doubts as yourself about these scams. Below is a typical scam and how they work it. Lotteries do not just pick your name out of thin air, and just so happen to have your email also. No Internet service provider gives their email list out to lotteries. If you did not pay to play you could not possibly win.

There are two reasons to have a lottery. One is to take in money from ticket sales, make a profit (for charity and for the organizers), and give back about half the money in prizes.

The other reason is to publicize a company. Something like when McDonald's has a million dollar sweepstakes (that actually only pays about $30,000 per year after tax for 25 years or similar).

Such a promotion is always heavily publicized and requires you to specifically enter the competition.

Those are the two basic ways that money is given away. The former is given to those who PAY to buy a ticket. The latter encourages people to do something, even though it may not be mandatory, it's generally some kind of publicity thing.

Simply picking your email address out of a hat and sending you a million dollars, just makes no sense. There would be no practical or realistic reason why this should ever happen. The company doing it would simply be giving money away for no good reason.

Any time you get an email telling you you won something, they either want you to impart some kind of personal information they can use to rip you off, or they want you to send them some money (taxes on the winnings or some other excuse), just to keep you money.

In any case, unless you actually signed up for a sweepstakes, or paid to enter a lottery it's a con.

If you didn't enter a lottery with them, it's not legit. We have had a terrible time convincing my 88 year old mother-in-law of this. She spends her entire Social Security check on supposed lotteries. We have told her over and over again that they are a form of fraud, but she thinks they're such nice people that they wouldn't do it. I called the Secretary of State here in Indiana, they agreed with us, and sent out pamphlets explaining just how the scam works, but we still can't get through to her.

In the US, the letters - along with the envelope they came in, regardless of the delivery method - are to be taken to the nearest Post Office, ATTN: US Postal Inspector. Any fraud delivered within the contiguous United States of America using any official delivery system comes under the offices of the US Postal Inspector General's Fraud Investigation Unit.

As for the documents looking oh-so-real, they're not. Using a computer graphics program, a person can create any kind of document whatsoever. Please remember that unless you can DIRECTLY contact the registered lottery company itself, not some agent, not some fellow on a cell phone, not some person in a country where the lottery is not registered with the gaming board, watch out!

Lastly, always remember - it's not who wrote the letter that makes it a scam, it's what the letter SAYS that makes it a scam.

Go thought this check list:

1) Are they asking me for money?

2) Are they asking me for personal information?

3) Do I recall entering that specific sweepstakes?

4) Does it sound too good to be true?

Once you review the answer to those questions, it will become pretty apparent what is happening. But if you need further verification, just send an email to the company that they claim to represent. Not the email they gave you, but the main one for the company.

You don't say where you live, but if you're in the US, then your son will have to pay taxes on his winnings. Age doesn't matter, he still has to file, and pay.

It's a fairly rare sweepstakes that allows a 15 year old to enter, but congratulations to him in any case - I guess he (and you) won't have to worry about how he's going to pay for college.

The only way it would affect your taxes is if he uses it to support himself this year, which would be pretty rare for a 15 year old - then you might lose your depenency exemption for him.

The above answer assumes you're in the US.

If it is FreeLotto, get rid of them. They want your credit card number. It they are asking for you to pay a fee to process, it is a scam. I called the Better Business Bureau to find out about all the ones I got in the mail and they told me they are not listed. Which means that they are probably a scam to get your money.

Don't do them. Don't reply to them. They are scams. Dateline NBC did a whole show on these types of emails. They actually responded to them. Alot of these emails come from Africa. After many replies and more info they get you to go over to Europe and meet with a guy. The guy gets a deposit from you and then wants more. He squeezes as much money out of you as possible then dissapears. NBC didn't just investigate one email... they replied to dozens. THEY ARE JUNK EMAILS TRYING TO TAKE YOUR MONEY DO NOT REPLY TO THEM!!!!

Reply:I got a similar letter. So I called the company that was on the check, and the person on the other line spoke with an Indian accent. He said "yes" I had won the lottery. He told me to call the agent that was listed in the letter.

Instead, I called the bank that the check was drawn from. Even thought the check was a "real" check, and the company was a "real" company, they did not have an account with that bank. The phone number under the company was not it's real phone number.

I'll tell you as soon as I stopped the lottery emails the started coming to my mail box outside my house.

So, I called the agent listed in the letter, it was odd that their business hours were from 4pm to 10pm. I called them at 5pm and left them a horrible message.

I have kept the check and the letter. I look at it every day. I am wanting to come up with a way to get even with all these con artists. And when I do; I will have really won a lottery.

you cut out each participating team or person in a competition. for example, all 16 teams of the European championships at the moment.

Then you put these names in a hat, or bag. People then take a team name without looking at what it is, and pay a set amount of money. Say, £5.00. All 16 teams are then pulled out of the hat, meaning that there is then £80.00 collected.

The prize money can then be split out however you want to. for example, £50.00 to the winner, £30.00 to the runner up, or £50.00 to the winner, £20.00 for the runner up, and £5.00 each for the semi-finalists.

It's just a laugh and makes certain competitions more exciting, and you don't have to know anything about the sport or event to take part.

They will often ask you to call a premium rate number and keep you holding on whilst you rack up a huge phone bill. They are then paid a large proportion of this phone bill. They may ask you to divulge personal information about yourself or ask for your bank or credit card details. Do not divulge any such information under any circumstances. It is surprising how many innocent victims have been duped by these types of emails. Just remember the thieves who send them are very clever and extremely convincing. I suggest you delete the email and send it into cyberspace, hopefully along with the thieving scumbags who send them.

They send you a check for, in this case, 4850. and you send them back 2950, The bank you deposited the check in will later inform you that the check was a fake, and you need to return any money you withdrew against it. And if you sent 3,000 back to the company, well, good luck getting it back.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has issued a consumer alert on counterfeit check scams. Please read below:

It’s your lucky day! You just won a foreign lottery! The letter says so. And the cashier’s check to cover the taxes and fees is included. There’s just one catch: this is a scam. The check is no good, even though it appears to be a legitimate cashier’s check. Fake Checks: Variations on a Scheme

Counterfeit or fake checks are being used in a growing number of fraudulent schemes, including foreign lottery scams (as described above), check overpayment scams, Internet auction scams, and secret shopper scams.

Check overpayment scams target consumers selling cars or other valuable items through classified ads or online auction sites. Unsuspecting sellers get stuck when scammers pass off bogus cashier’s checks, corporate checks, or personal checks. Here’s how it happens:

A scam artist replies to a classified ad or auction posting, offers to pay for the item with a check, and then comes up with a reason for writing the check for more than the purchase price. The scammer asks the seller to wire back the difference after depositing the check. The seller does it, and later, when the scammer’s check bounces, the seller is left liable for the entire amount.

In secret shopper scams, the consumer, hired to be a secret shopper, is asked to evaluate the effectiveness of a money transfer service. The consumer is given a check, told to deposit it in their bank account, and withdraw the amount in cash. Then, the consumer is told to take the cash to the money transfer service specified, and typically, send the transfer to a person in a Canadian city. Then, the consumer is supposed to evaluate their experience — but no one collects the evaluation. The secret shopper scenario is just a scam to get the consumer’s money.

Con artists who use these schemes can easily avoid detection. When funds are sent through wire transfer services, the recipients can pick up the money at other locations within the same country; it is nearly impossible for the sender to identify or locate the recipient.

You and Your Bank — Who is Responsible for What?

Under federal law, banks must make funds available to you from U.S. Treasury checks, official bank checks (cashier’s checks, certified checks, and teller’s checks), and checks paid by government agencies at the opening of business the day after you deposit the check. For other checks, banks must similarly make the first $100 available the day after you deposit the check. Remaining funds must be made available on the second day after the deposit if payable by a local bank, and within five days if drawn on distant banks.

However, just because funds are available on a check you’ve deposited doesn’t mean the check is good. It’s best not to rely on money from any type of check (cashier, business or personal check, or money order) unless you know and trust the person you’re dealing with or, better yet — until the bank confirms that the check has cleared. Forgeries can take weeks to be discovered and untangled. The bottom line is that until the bank confirms that the funds from the check have been deposited into your account, you are responsible for any funds you withdraw against that check.

Protecting Yourself

Here’s how to avoid a counterfeit check scam:

Throw away any offer that asks you to pay for a prize or a gift. If it’s free or a gift, you shouldn’t have to pay for it. Free is free.

Resist the urge to enter foreign lotteries. It’s illegal to play a foreign lottery through the mail or the telephone, and most foreign lottery solicitations are phony.

Know who you’re dealing with, and never wire money to strangers.

If you’re selling something, don’t accept a check for more than the selling price, no matter how tempting the offer or how convincing the story. Ask the buyer to write the check for the correct amount. If the buyer refuses to send the correct amount, return the check. Don’t send the merchandise.

As a seller, you can suggest an alternative way for the buyer to pay, like an escrow service or online payment service.

There may be a charge for an escrow service. If the buyer insists on using a particular escrow or online payment service you’ve never heard of, check it out. Visit its website, and read its terms of agreement and privacy policy. Call the customer service line. If there isn’t one — or if you call and can’t get answers about the service’s reliability — don’t use the service. To learn more about escrow services and online payment systems, visit ftc.gov/onlineshopping.

If you accept payment by check, ask for a check drawn on a local bank, or a bank with a local branch. That way, you can make a personal visit to make sure the check is valid. If that’s not possible, call the bank where the check was purchased, and ask if it is valid. Get the bank’s phone number from directory assistance or an Internet site that you know and trust, not from the check or from the person who gave you the check.

If the buyer insists that you wire back funds, end the transaction immediately. Legitimate buyers don’t pressure you to send money by wire transfer services. In addition, you have little recourse if there’s a problem with a wire transaction.

Resist any pressure to “act now.” If the buyer’s offer is good now, it should be good after the check clears.

This email message is a fake lottery scam. Consider the following facts about real lotteries:

They don't notify winners by email.

You can't win without first buying a lottery ticket.

They don't randomly select email addresses to award prizes to.

They don't use free email accounts (Yahoo, Hotmail, etc) to communicate with you.

They don't tell you to call a mobile phone number.

They don't tell you to keep your winnings secret.

They will never ask a winner to pay any fees to receive a prize!

Sounds like you are having some troubles with something you paid for. A clearinghouse is a way of soliciting you with the offer that you may win a large prize. In order to enter though you must make a purchase. Usually magazines or something similar. I've never had any problems receving something I have bought like that. Check out www.bbb.org to look up the business you are inquiring about though. good luck!
Reply:If any sweepstakes requires you to pay a fee to collect your "winnings" then you haven't won anything, you are being scammed. Since you ask about getting refunded, I assume something like that happened. If you could find them you might be able to sue them or press charges - but the likelihood of finding them is about zero.

My understanding of those contests is that the really big prizes are tightly controlled by the company. Rare game pieces are sent to specific areas around the country to prevent million-dollar prizes from being won in the same location (the idea is to spread the wealth so that anyone can win something big regardless of whether they live in rural Nebraska or in Los Angeles). If you recall, McDonalds had a scandal a few years ago when some employees of the company that they had hired to distribute the big prize game pieces conspired to distribute them to a few selected friends and relatives. The scheme fell apart when one of the people involved wasn't satisified with his "cut" of the prize money and started talking.

If you do make enough money, you will have to go out and listen to a time share presentation (about 1 1/2 to 2 hours) in order to claim your prize. They really do have prizes and can afford to give them away because they make so much money and they hire the hardest, slickest salespeople in the market so they know that a lot of people who come out will buy.

The reason for the sweepstakes is to increase business. That really works very well.

The odds of winning as remarkably small, which may make it seem like a rip off, but I believe it is an honest sweepstakes and the prizes are actually awarded. Since the company does not charge for entering the sweepstakes it is legal, so if by a rip off you mean illegal, theft or deception, it is not a rip off.

What kind of payment did you need to send for a sweepstakes if YOU WON?

This sounds quite a bit like a fraud...can you stop payment on your account if you paid by check....

You might even need to alert your bank and change your account.

If they have your social security number place a fraud alert on your credit reports

and by all means, like the poster above stated, CONTACT THE POLICE

I received a check ($3850) and letter in the mail 4 days ago stating that I had won the lottery. I called the number and the guy told me to place the check in my bank account so I did and after that the money cleared. Now he wants me to take the money to a certain location and give it to someone for clearance fees for my $225,000 check that I will receive in the mail by overnight 24 hour delivery. Should I take him this money or should I just keep it and let bygons be bygons? Its a scam!!!! The check appears to clear, you take the money out, then the bank discovers the cheque is fradulent and wants the money back...FROM YOU!!!

DO NOT hand over any money. Phone your bank and explain to them, they will investigate and you can bet your last jellybaby that they will come back with the news that this is a fraud.

I then called them back they want money for insuranc purposes they say. do your self a favor look everything up on the check and you will relize the scam they are trying to run. I know how good that 250,000.00usd looks it is hard to let it go but it's not really there.

Reply:I love contests! When I went to a Brides Against Breast Cancer gown sale, I won a three night stay and air fare to Boca Raton, FL. I've entered a whole bunch of contests since then, but to no avail. One of my favorite blog announced a contest for a really nice photography package recently, but took down the post saying that the contest is actually going to be much bigger. I'm guessing photography + some other vendor (nice cake, a dress, flowers, etc.). The Food Network has "wedding week" where the select one couple and provide all of their food for their reception free. But the couple has to be pretty HOT(good looking enough for TV) and have an exotic wedding location.

The Style network also select some couples and give them a wedding planner and a vacation (Whose wedding is it anyway), in exchange of making fun of their poor finances and poor style choices on national TV.

Same thing in the show "Bridezilla", you can be on TV and get a honey moon for free in exchange of making fun of your poor behaviour and tacky fashions.

Other contests are if you go to a bridal expo, with your paid admission they will enter you in a raffle or orizes that the bussiness teher are required to give. I've heard many people getting free dresses, limo or a photography package.

Honestly, trying to do this through a contest is just setting your sister up for more disappointment if she doesn't win or get a "dream wedding" and it sounds like she has been through a lot already. Talk to her about what would make it special for her within the means of what you can all do.

i got a letter saying i won money they sent a check saying deposit it in my account for processing fees. they never asked for money out my pocket. i try to cash the check and the bank said its fraudulent. the company used names such as publishing clearing house,readers digest etc.....

That is a really popular scam going around these days. They impersonate some of the top names in the sweepstakes industry and include a check to make themselves look legit, but they're not - and those companies are not really involved, either.

The people who are behind these scams are very sophisticated criminals, usually based out of Nigeria. They get runners living in Canada to do the dirty work of actually picking up the money, so that even if the police are lucky enough to catch someone involved (which is very hard), then it's no one who really affects the organization.

You should contact your local police. If this check was sent out of Canada, you should also contact Phonebusters at http://www.phonebusters.com - they actually try to stop this kind of fraud.

If you actually wired the money, you can also contact your local attorney general. In some rare cases, they can help you recoup your money. And if you received the letter in the mail, you can contact the Post Master General, who also investigate mail fraud.

These scammers are all sitting in the craphole called Nigeria in Africa typing this crap to you b/c they are lazy useless thieves.

They'll offer you the winnings IF You send the (INSERT FEE HERE) Starter's fee or whatever.... but they'll pay some of it! haha

They then offer to send you a "check" for twice the amount of the fee %26amp; tell you if you deposit it in your bank.... you can pay the fee %26amp; KEEP the other half!

Sounds too good right? It is!

The check they send is no good. They want you to deposit it, NOT wait for it to clear your bank, and go ahead %26amp; send them the "fee."

Well, you've just basically paid them for no reason, b/c the check will bounce %26amp; you've just sent money to Africa for no reason.

You'll never hear from them again.

In any sweepstakes' official rules, there will be directions on how to see a list of winners. They do really have winners but it doesn't make much sense for these companies to pay for ads to announce them.

I was walking in a mall in NJ where I saw a sweepstake for a car. I put my details and they called me to say that I win a 500$ gift card and timeshare vacation.

I went to their office in new jersey and after long hour talk, I find myself signing a non-cancellable contract with them and I have to pay for $2500 and $300 yearly fees for the timeshare vacation that I never wanted. They have good way in interviewing that you find yourself misled and you cannot cancel the contract. Does this happen to anyone before?

I don't know about NJ but in California we have the same things our malls. From what I heard they take the cards you fill out to put you on a mailing list to send you all kind of junk mails.

You should contact the NJ Attorney Generals office and file any complaint forms necessary.

You should not have signed any papers to begin with,you should have walked away as soon as they told you that you had to pay those fees. A non-cancelable contract might be illegal and you might even have to take legal action to get your money back.
