Is there a place to go to find out if a particular sweepstakes is for real?
Yes, common sense.
Go thought this check list:
1) Are they asking me for money?
2) Are they asking me for personal information?
3) Do I recall entering that specific sweepstakes?
4) Does it sound too good to be true?
Once you review the answer to those questions, it will become pretty apparent what is happening. But if you need further verification, just send an email to the company that they claim to represent. Not the email they gave you, but the main one for the company.
Reply:Use Google to search for part of the e-mail that you received. That usually brings up lots of information, mostly at anti-scam sites.
You can also check http://www.scamwarners.com for lots of other information.
