Is it legal for a sweepstakes to force you to buy something to win? Someone with law experience please answer!

So I won a car... now they are telling me I have to go to the university that was putting on the contest to claim it. (you did not have to be a student to enter). Isn't this essentially forcing me to pay money to claim the car, which is illegal in Canada?

All the lawyers out there please comment!

Are you getting this car in Canada or the US? I am answering the question as if you are in the US.

Are they just having you pick up the car at a university or are they making you buy something? If you still have the link or paperwork that you submitted to win this car read it. I would bet money that in small print somewhere it is stated that the winner must pick up the car at the university. Often times, a winner must claim their prize at a certain location. Since you most likely agreed to that then it is a legal contract. FYI, you will have to pay taxes on the car both federal income taxes (next april) and state taxes when you register the vehicle.
Reply:unless the sweepstakes prize included delivery, I don't see a problem. They are not making you buy anything. You are free to walk to where the car is located. That you don't wish to do so is not their problem, because it is you that is requiring you to spend the money, not them.
Reply:I would suggest asking this in Yahoo! Canada.

The legal system and regulations are different here in the US.
Reply:Read the terms of agreements next time.
