http://www.snopes.com has a lot of articles on hoaxes and scams that one finds online and in emails, as well as on a bunch of different rumors and urban legends, and the site is update several times each week.
If the email is fairly known, it should have an article on it at snopes. If not, there's a place where you can send them an email and an attachment of the email you received, and you'll hear back from them in a few days.
